one hour at the newscafé
We had flown down to West Palm for a family emergency and needed a respite before heading home. So instead of hightailing it early to the airport we sped down to South Beach to sit for an hour outside our favorite spot, the Newscafé on Ocean Drive, and watch the passing parade of people they call "the flow." It was the middle of the summer, the off-season, and late afternoon to boot, so "the flow" would not include the usual supermodel-wannabes. No. This crowd was definitely "Jersey Shore" wannabes. But, as you can tell from these photos, maybe more interesting to gawk at.

homage to robert frank
(a ride on New Orleans' St. Charles streetcar on a cold grey day)

It's not a new concept: Robert Frank did it from the window of a bus and Ruth Orkin did it from the window of her apartment overlooking Central Park. But it is a simple concept— great photographs are everywhere. You don't always need to go hunting for them, sometimes you can just sit and wait for them to come to you. This month's aspect ratio:: features three such shoots of my own, beginning with one hour at the newscafé as described at left.

streetcar ride on a cold grey day
(for robert frank)

Not much to explain except the obvious: it was a cold grey day in New Orleans and I took a ride on the streetcar from Canal Street to the end of the line on Carrolton Avenue and back; sitting by the window all the while and taking random snaps as the sights flew by. BACK TO TOP

from my bedroom window
(for ruth orkin)

watching the world go by at 81st and 3rd, among the things I can see: a motorcycle club cruising by an oblivious neighbor, the clash of restaurant awnings in springtime, and a girl bouncing a ball amidst the crowd at the 3rd Avenue streetfair. BACK TO TOP
