statement: 
That aspect of my work which deals stylistically or thematically with
Black and/or African culture has been looked at askance by both blacks
and whites of a certain ilk. To one group I’m a n-----lover and to the other a
culture-thief.
What I personally find surprising is not that a Jewish artist should be
so engaged but that it should surprise anyone. After all, beyond the racial bond,
common to all peoples of the Mediterranean, we are both people of the
Exodus. Ours,
depicted in the Old Testament, and theirs, metaphorically modeled on the
